Link to Language : Direct Speech Read the sentences below . E > Tanya said , "I want to explain something . " S > "Dr . Salomon and Mary are right , " Mr . Green told the audience . c Mary explained , "I am a great believer in games . " 13 "What kind of computer games do you like to play ? " asked Mary . When a person ' s exact words are written down , we call it direct speech . Quotation marks show the exact words spoken by a speaker . The whole statement , including the full stop , question mark or exclamation mark at the end of the sentence , is inside the quotation marks . Note the following punctuation rules : ? The statement begins with a capital letter . ? A comma comes before the quotation marks . It separates what is being said from the person who is saying it . 2 In your notebook , rewrite the following using direct speech .
