Games , Games , Games Tom Baker , a 9 grade student at Jefferson High School , won first prize for his research report on games . Read the introduction to the report and find out why games are an important part of our lives . Games have been an important part of our life experience for thousands of years A game is a contest with rules , has a winner and is usually played for fun . There are many different types of games played by children , adults , or both . In fact , it's hard to imagine life without games . There are three main categories of board games : war-type games , role-play games and chance games . War-type games , such as chess , involve strategies similar to battle scenes * . In role-play games , such as Monopoly , players work together to reach a goal and take on the roles of the characters in the game . Racing games , such as snakes and ladders , are based on chance . Players roll the dice and race around the board to see who finishes first . People enjoy playing all types of board games . Many people enjoy card games . In card games , a player deals cards to the others . The players make families , groups of numbers or suits * . Card games , such as bridge and rummy , are found in many countries although some of the rules may be different . Tile games , such as dominoes and Rummy Cube , are basically card games played with tiles instead of cards . Although they are not exactly the same , card and tile games are popular games that are played all over the world . Outdoor games involve physical activity , such as running , jumping and climbing . Hopscotch , jump rope and hide-and-seek are examples of outdoor games . The names and rules are different from country to country . For example , hopscotch is called " escargot " ( snail ) in France and " class" in Israel ( from Russian — "levels" ) . However , whatever the name of the game , outdoor games will always be popular with young people . Today , many types of games are becoming digital and are played on a computer or a video . Although some digital games are based on popular board or card games , many are designed specifically for digital technology . In the future , more and more people will be playing digital games . * scene — a place where something happens ; a scenario . * suit ( in cards ) — hearts ( V ) . diamonds (?) , clubs (*) and spades (?) .
