S Read about cummings and Santos and their work . e . e . cummings ( 1 894- 1962 ) , an American poet , is well known for his visual poems , which use unusual punctuation and line and word structures . In this poem , the words are split and must be read across and down , outside and within the parentheses ( "a leaf falls , loneliness" ) . The letter " 1 " is used as both the number one ( 1 ) and the letter "I" and shows the connection between individuality ( the self , or "I" ) , loneliness , and oneness ( the number 1 ) with the falling leaf . The painting "Fall" by Margriet Santos was inspired by cummings's poem . Santos was thinking of both a falling leaf and oneness , but also of a larger theme : what happens to nature right before winter . She said , "Imagine what the painting would look like without the falling leaf ... I wanted the cause as to why the leaf is really falling to be called into question . " 3 Is it important to know something about an artist when looking at his or her work ? Discuss . subject— what a work of literature or art is about . "Fall " by Margriet Santos ( born 1971 )
