In space , the astronauts live by a 24-hour schedule that does not match the day-night cycle * on Earth . They work and sleep on this fixed schedule to match natural body time and to prevent jet lag * . The graph shows the average number of hours spent on each daily activity . What do astronauts eat ? Astronauts eat similar meals to those on Earth . There is no refrigerator or freezer on the Space Shuttle . They bring food that can stay fresh at room temperature for a long time . Foods are freeze-dried or canned and others , like nuts and cookies , are fine just the way they are . Good food keeps the astronauts healthy and happy . What do astronauts do in their free time ? Life in space is busy and stressful so astronauts need time to relax . Astronauts read , watch videos , write email , listen to music or play games . Looking into space and at Earth is a very popular free time activity . Why do the astronauts have to exercise ? When astronauts orbit Earth , they don't feel the effects of gravity . This means that during normal , everyday activities their muscles and their hearts don ' t get enough exercise . For example , when you walk on Earth , you move all your body weight with your legs . In orbit , however , it takes almost no effort to move because of "weightlessness . " Regular exercise in space keeps the body strong and healthy .
