Clarke ( 1 917- ) is a modern British science fiction writer who writes about technology and its effect on man . Already in 1949 , he wrote about communication satellites . Many of his stories examine the search for life in the universe . 5 Read the text on the back cover of the book , Rendezvous * with Rama . What is the setting of the story ? Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C . Clarke ( 1973 ) In the year 2130 , a huge , mysterious , cylindrical * object appears in space , moving towards the Sun . The citizens of our solar system send a spaceship to investigate . What will happen when the spaceship and the cylindrical object meet ? What will they find ? Excerpt from Chapter 3 : Rama and Sita The first images , from ten thousand kilometers away , brought to a halt * the activities of mankind . On a billion television screens , there appeared a tiny , featureless cylinder , growing rapidly second-by-second . By the time it had doubled its size , no one could pretend any longer that Rama was a natural object . Rama grew until it filled the screen . Its surface was a dull , drab gray , as colorless as the Moon , and completely devoid or markings . The images from the other cameras added nothing new . It was far too light to be a solid body . To nobody's great surprise , it was clear that Rama must be hollow * . The long-hoped-for , long-feared encounter * had come at last . Mankind was about to receive the first visitor from the stars .
