Taking a Stand : The Pros and Cons In online forums , people discuss and debate issues in writing . They often take a stand on the issues and present opposing views . Oral debates 3 ^ another framework where people present their views on issues . An oral debate is a discussion stating the pros and cons of an issue The debate is presented according to a set format and in a set period of time , such as : Pro — Opening statement and supporting arguments ( 3-4 minutes ) Con — Opening statement and supporting arguments ( 3-4 minutes ) Pro — Closing statement and answering the issues raised ( 2-3 minutes ) Con — Closing statement and answering the issues raised ( 2-3 minutes ) In the above example , there are one or two participants representing each side of the issue .
