"Click on that one , " said Mario , pointing at the digital image of a panda on the computer screen . "We need the panda in there too . And add the elephant to our Digi-World as well , " he instructed his sister . "I love elephants , " said Cara , clicking on the image of the African elephant . "They have such funny teeth . " "Tusks , " corrected Mario . "They're called tusks . " "What about the dinosaur , should we add a dinosaur ? " asked Cara . "Dinosaurs don ' t go with elephants and pandas , " said their father who had been watching them play . "Elephants and pandas became extinct during the twenty-first century . Dinosaurs died out long before then . " "You mean there really were animals called pandas and dinosaurs and elephants ? " asked Cara wide-eyed . Yes , they had taken action just in time . Ergon was on a routine mission to one of the space stations that circled Earth . He looked at the planet from the window of the spaceship . Earth was a round ball of blue and green , even from this great distance . They had worked hard to persuade all the inhabitants to use their precious resources wisely , without greed . There had been one period in history when the planet had been in danger . Between the late 1 900 s and early 2000 s , the air and water of the planet had become more and more polluted ; temperatures had risen steadily as a result of trapped gases in the atmosphere ; and many of the planet ' s diverse species of animals and plants had been dying out . Now , the planet had clear and blue seas and lakes , green fields and beautiful rainforests .
