Mapping a Story Before writing a story , the author usually decides what the story will be about and what will happen . One way to plan a story is to make a story map . 1 The box below shows the main elements of a story . Discuss why each of these elements is important . Title — the name of the story Setting — where and when the story takes place Theme — what the story is about Message — the basic and most important idea in the story Characters — the people in the story Plot — the planned series of events or incidents in the story Conflict — the central struggle or disagreement in the story Sequence of events — the order in which things happen Climax — turning point or the high point in the story Foreshadowing —a hint given to show what is going to happen in the story Resolution — the solution to the conflict 2 Find the story elements that are included in the review of "A Sound of Thunder" on page 20 and complete the mapping on Student Work Page You may not have all the information to complete the story map .
