Steps in Preparing the Simulation Use this page to guide you if you are doing the town meeting classroom project . If you are doing the online project , use the online "Project Preview" as a guide . Scenario You live in a small town on the south-east coast of the United States . A hurricane is expected to strike your area within two days . It has been defined as a Category 3 hurricane . You are invited to a town meeting , where the mayor will listen to different opinions about whether to evacuate or stay in the town . You will take part in the meeting according to one of the roles listed below . Choosing a role Choose one of the following roles and submit your request to the teacher : ? mayor or deputy mayor ? family member ( father , mother , child , grandparent ) ? natural disasters expert ? vet or animal expert / person from animal shelter ? weather expert ? person from disaster relief organization Preparing a role card ? Use the following role card as a guide and prepare your role card with suitable infonnation . ROLE CARD FOR : FAMILY MEMBER ( MOTHER ) Who I am : Amy Pownes , mother of two children aged 10 and 8 > . What I know about hurricanes : They sometimes destroy houses ; it ie possible to track hurricanes and to know where and when they will strike . What I know about this hurricane : It is a Category 3 hurricane and could be dangerous . What I am worried about : My family and my home . What my decision will probably be and why : To go with my children to my parents , who live in another part of the country . My children are very scared . What I will say at the meeting : I don ' t want to leave my home , but I don ' t want anything bad to happen to my family . All families with children should leave . How I will say it : In a nervous voice . I don ' t like speaking at big meetings . What may make me change my mind : If the experts give us different information . ? Show your role card to a partner . If necessary , make improvements and corrections according to his or her feedback . ? Look at your partner's role card and give him or her your feedback . ? Submit the role card to your teacher for assessment . Make improvements and corrections if necessary . Taking part in the town meeting ? Present your opinion or decision according to your role . ? If necessary , defend your opinion or decision . ? If you change your mind during the town meeting , present your new opinion and explain who or what made you change your opinion .
