U Read the article to learn about where hurricanes start . Where Hurricanes are Born When people think of hurricanes , they usually think of water and wind . That is because hurricanes are strong storms that bring a lot of rain . However , it might surprise a lot of people to know that many hurricanes start over hot and dry areas . In fact , almost all of the large hurricanes that strike the United States start in the desertof west Africa . Hurricanes start when the dry air of the desert meets the wind from the high mountains . The mixture of sand , dusty air and wind makes clouds . These clouds bring rainstorms that quickly travel across the African desert and reach the west coast of Africa . Sometimes , these storms die out over the Atlantic Ocean . But sometimes , they get more energy and develop into threatening hurricanes . When this happens , people in the Caribbean and the east coast of America have to prepare for danger . o Meteorologists study the weather . They try to understand how hurricanes are born so that they can make better predictions . Unfortunately , it is not easy to understand nature . Meteorologists cannot yet tell which desert storms will become hurricanes . But they have not given up hope .
