A Read the article . Tasty Treats Israeli food is a mixture of different food cultures from countries far and wide . This is because when people came to live in Israel , they brought with them their special dishes . In the late 1800 s , when Jews began coming to Jerusalem from the Balkans and countries under Turkish control , they brought us their favorite foods like sambousak , bourekas and vegetables filled with rice and meat . At the same time , people learned to eat schnitzel brought from Germany , gefilte fish and kugels from Poland and borsht and herring from Russia . Iraqi , Yemenite and Kurdish Jews who came to the new State of Israel in 1948 , brought their special Jewish dishes with them . Iraqi sabich and Yemenite jachnun served for breakfast on the Sabbath are good examples . Jews from Morocco taught us to love couscous , shakshouka , matbucha , and chraime – fish cooked in a spicy tomato sauce .
