Now Read Read the story . While you read , answer the questions in the margin . The Dinner Party Based on a short story by Mona Gardner “ Mrs . Wynnes , this meal is excellent , ” said Mrs . Green . “ You couldn’t find any better at home in England . ” “ Why thank you , ” said Mrs . Wynnes . “ That’s a real compliment . I taught my cooks here in India to prepare meals just the way we ate them in 5 England . How are you managing with your staff ? ” “ At first it was hard to find good workers , but we are managing very nicely now , ” replied Mrs . Green . “ Mr . Green , how was the hunting on your holiday back in England ? ” Mr . Wynnes asked his guest . 10 “ Jolly good , Mr . Wynnes , ” replied Mr . Green . “ Thank you . ” Mr Wynnes’ daughter , Alison , was bored with the adults’ conversation . She turned towards one of the young army officers , hoping for a more interesting conversation . Cecil , one of the British officers , noticed Alison looking at him and asked 15 her , “ Do you enjoy hunting , Miss Wynnes , or is the sight of a dead animal too much for your delicate character ?” “ What a silly question , ” Alison replied . “ The time when women jumped on a chair at the sight of a mouse is long gone . Women can be just as daring and brave as men . We do not scare easily . ” 20 “ Oh , is that so , Miss Wynnes ? ” said Wilfred , the second army officer . “ Well , I disagree with you . When there is any trouble or danger , a woman’s instinct is to scream and faint . ” Alison looked at the officer coolly and did not reply . Wilfred continued in a snobbish way , “ While many men may feel fear , they 25 will not show it because they have that extra bit of self-control that women don’t have . It’s that extra self-control that makes all the difference . ” Mr . Charles Stone , the American , did not join in the discussion . He preferred to listen and watch the facial expressions of Mrs . Wynnes and the guests . At that moment , he saw a strange expression come over Mrs . 30 Wynnes’ face . “ Hm , ” he thought to himself , “ I wonder what’s on her mind . ” Mr . Stone noticed Mrs . Wynnes slightly turn to the servant standing next to her . She spoke quietly to him . She was hardly moving her lips . The servant’s eyes opened wide in shock and he quickly left the room . 1 Where are the Wynnes and Green families from ? 2 Where do they live now ? 3 Who went hunting ? 4 Who is Alison ? 5 Who is Cecil ? 6 What does Alison say about women ? 7 Does Wilfred agree with Alison ? 8 What does Wilfred say about men ? 9 What does Mr .
