Energy Type versus Energy Source * You are now familiar with different types of energy . But what is their source ? Generally speaking , the energy stored in various sources of energy cannot be used for daily needs as is . For instance , the chemical energy stored in fuel cannot be used as is for lighting or for powering electrical appliances . In order to make it useful , chemical energy must be converted into a convenient source of energy . For example , imagine a pot heating over a gas flame . Combustion of the cooking gas converts the chemical energy stored in it to heat . This heat heats the pot , and the pot in turn heats the water . In this case , the source of energy is cooking gas . Examples of energy sources are : kerosene , coal , the Sun , food , waterfall , natural gas , uranium * , and geothermal energy source * . Energy source : A substance or a phenomenon from which useful energy can be produced . Uranium : A metal that serves as a source of nuclear energy . Geothermal energy source : A source of heat located deep within the earth that serves as a source of energy . It is manifested , for example , in the hot water found in the depths of the earth . Precision is important ! Water energy and wind energy are not scientific terms ; instead , we talk about the wind’s kinetic energy and the water’s potential energy . Several types of energy exist : kinetic energy , radiation energy , heat , electrical energy , chemical energy , potential energy , elastic energy , and nuclear energy .
