1 PRESENT SIMPLE POSITIVE : base verb ( + s ) I work . He works . NEGATIVE : do / does not + base verb We don’t work . She doesn’t work . QUESTION : Do / Does … + base verb Do they work ? Does it work ? WH- QUESTION : Wh-word + question Where do you work ? We use the Present Simple in the following cases : A The sun always rises in the east . general truths or facts B Michael likes to walk in the evening . He often visits his friends . habits or customs C The new programme begins next week . future plans ( with future time expression ); often refers to timetables or programmes D “ Beckham kicks the ball ! It’s a goal !” sporting events , story-telling , jokes TIME EXPRESSIONS These appear at the beginning or end of a sentence : every day each year once a week on Tuesday regularly daily yearly in the evening , etc . These appear before the main verb , or after the verb to be : always often sometimes seldom usually generally occasionally never SPELLING RULES We usually add s to the 3 rd person singular ( he , she , it ) . We add es : a For verbs ending in s , ss , sh , ch , x and o . mix – mixes wish – wishes watch – watches do – does b For verbs ending in consonant + y .
