6 Pop , Pop , Popcorn ! Everybody loves popcorn . It’s a favorite snack food at the movies , at sports games and at circuses . It is also one of the oldest snack foods in the world ! 4700 BCE Scientists discovered corn cobs * in Peru . They believe that people in Peru made popcorn from these corn cobs as early as 6 , 000 years ago . 1492 When Christopher Columbus landed in America , he saw that the Native Americans were wearing popcorn necklaces . They were also eating popcorn . Columbus liked the popcorn jewelry and thought the strange new food was delicious . 1621 When English settlers in America celebrated the first Thanksgiving * , the Native Americans brought bowls of popcorn to the feast . The English loved this tasty treat . They designed a special basket for making popcorn . 1890 s The first popcorn machine was invented by Charles Cretors . People put the popcorn machines on carts and pushed them through the streets , selling the tasty snack . These carts became popular at parks , fairs , zoos and circuses . The snack was popular because it wasn’t expensive and it was easy to eat . 1900 Movie theaters began to open all over America , and each one had its own popcorn machine . Popcorn became the food of the movie theater and it still is today . 1939-1945 During World War II , there wasn’t enough sugar , butter and chocolate in America . Instead of cookies , cakes and chocolate , people ate popcorn . Popcorn was also sent to American soldiers in Europe . Because of this , it became a popular snack in England and Europe . 1945-1947 Percy Spencer put popcorn in a microwave to cook – and created the first popcorn made in a microwave . 1984 The first microwave popcorn was sold in America .
