MAyPOlES On the first day of May , called May Day , there was a custom in England to celebrate the beginning of summer with singing and dancing . On May Day , people cut down a young tree and put it in the center of the village . Maypoles were once common all over England , and villages would keep them from one year to the next . The traditional May Day dance was known as maypole dancing .
